Nineteenth Sunday of the Year

Today's reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that we are migrants.  Like Abraham and Sarah we journey with God.  We may have a permanent address, a job, even a car, we are migrants nevertheless.  We will only be here for a relatively short time.  We should be cautious about putting down roots that are too deep; for when the Lord calls, we must be ready to go!

Faith helps find our way in this world. Faith reminds us of all that God has done and continues to do in our lives.  By faith we experience God's providential love that makes us his little flock and heirs to his kingdom.

Faith also challenges us to remain alert and busy working for the kingdom of God.  We are to see the world and all its problems through the lens of our faith.  While many believe the world's problems are too big to be solved, faith teaches that all things can be accomplished in Christ.  The Lord relies on us to use our faith and talents to transform this world.  Faith enables us to see beyond our limited cultural vision to find the truth as God sees it.  Faith also empowers us to roll up our sleeves and make a difference.  In Luke's gospel, Jesus puts it this way: "That servant is fortunate whom his master finds busy when he returns."  And again: "When much has been given... much will be required."

There is so much we can do improve the situations we find around us, but we need to look at them through our faith.
