Fourth Sunday of Advent

St. Joseph is one of the heroes of the Nativity story, yet we know very little about him from the scriptures.  We are told that he was from the house of David, he was a carpenter, and he loved Mary very much.  According to Matthew’s account, when Joseph was informed that Mary was with child, he did not want to expose her to the law.  Instead, he decided to divorce her quietly.  Joseph might have become angry or bitter over the news of the pregnancy.  He could have demanded that Mary be stoned to death for the apparent indiscretion, but he loved her too much for that.

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, he did as the angel directed.  What tremendous faith this carpenter had in the God of his Fathers.  Just as Mary had to surrender her will to God in order for the Incarnation to take place, so Joseph was asked to set aside his plans, doubts, and fears in order to take his part in salvation history.

The profound faith of Joseph and Mary are important keys to understanding the meaning of the Advent and Christmas seasons.  God is forever breaking into our lives, but we need humility and trust in order to recognize Him when he comes.

Our Advent Season is almost over.  I hope and pray that you will be able to relax a little bit and enjoy this Christmas time with friends and family.  On behalf of the entire parish staff, may you have a safe and holy Christmas and in the coming year may the Lord grant His peace and all good things besides.
